Dave’s Destinations: The Expired Parking Meter Grave
Dave’s Destinations: The Expired Parking Meter Grave

The Largest Ball of Twine. The Grand Canyon. Hoover Dam. The Griswold family made road trip destinations famous in the classic 1980s movie Vacation. But sightseeing in real life is even more enjoyable.

Summertime is built for road trips and sightseeing. There are a number of wonderful sights to see across Massachusetts. Many of them make for great road trip destinations, whether it’s a daytrip or a longer stay at any time of year.

Since the Bay State is fairly small, most of these sights can be reached and seen on a single tank of gas, often for a lot less.

The Florida Baptist Church (photo credit: Google Earth), located near North Adams, has a small graveyard with one particularly interesting plot. It’s the one where Gordy and Joyce Burdick reside.

Their shared gravesite is marked by an expired parking meter. Nope, coins won’t bring ’em back. Gordy passed away in 2003. His wife Joyce joined him in 2011.

The parking meter can been seen on the south side of Highway 2 in the hamlet of Florida. The church is located, appropriately enough, on Church Road. Admission to this attraction is free of charge.

Here’s the link to the Roadside America page about the expired parking meter grave, containing more information (including photos) about that attraction, plus a few other places of interest in Massachusetts and beyond.
